The Real Inspiration Behind Her New Album
“Songs of Mass Destruction”
By Chris Allen
Annie Lennox is a multi-million selling, Grammy award-winning, legendary artist. Her career spans over 30 years. Lennox is best known as the front woman and voice of the Eurythmics.
But these days, there is something in her life that has become more important than music. Annie personally witnessed Nelson Mandela, greeting the world press in front of his former prison cell on Robin Island. Annie says, “His message was that the pandemic of HIV/AIDS in Africa was in fact, genocide.” Since that moment, it became her life’s goal to do as much as possible to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS crisis.
The music is now the tool, and the voice of her greatest concern – the worldwide AIDS pandemic. Specifically the transmission of HIV from mother to unborn child, even more specifically in Africa, where the number of dead and dying reach into the millions.
Annie Lennox’s new album, Songs Of Mass Destruction, is as moving as it is politically charged. It contains a song titled Sing, a powerful anthem. For Annie, this song is meant to be so much more than just another chart-topping hit from a new album. Sing is Annie’s soul filled call to arms in attempt to turn the battle, sorry I mean war against HIV/AIDS in a winning direction.
Harnessing the Power of 23 Pop Icons
Lennox invited over 20 successful and well-known women recording artists to participate in the recording of the track. The list is fabulous and music’s powerful icons like Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Celine Dion, Gladys Knight, Fergie, Pink, Faith Hill, Dido, K.D. Lang, Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, Anastacia and more.
